The region of the ancient Hermopolis stretches about 5 km from El -Ashmonin (Eastern Hermopolis) to Tuna El Gebel (Western Hermopolis) in Mallawi, El Minia (see map). Mythologically it is the place where the eight contradictory forces, of chaos /darkness wedded those of order / light.  It is also the place where man discovered the alchemical path to his own humanity and learned how the soul, through the fire of knowledge, could transmute itself and rise from its ashes with integrity …

The ancient Hermopolis is the city of the Lord of Time, the restorer of order and the guardian of thought (Thoth), with a temple dedicated in his honour in El-Ashmunin and an endless labyrinth of catacombs dedicated to his symbolic sacred bird the ‘Ibis’ in Tuna El-Gebel. The engraved poetic words on the walls of the unusually beautiful tomb of the scribe ‘Petosiris’ in Tuna El Gebel bears  witness to this shrine of words and all beginnings…

The cult of "Thoth" played a pivotal role in the progression of Egyptian philosophical thought, as reflected in the writings attributed to HermesTrismeginous. In Hellenistic Egypt, the area was called "Hermopolis Magna", named after Hermes, the Greek god equivalent to Thoth. Hermopolis became a world center of learning in Greco-Roman Egypt, enjoyed close links to the ancient library of Alexandria and was inspirational to the Alexandria Neo-Platonist circle of philosophers ...

The Hermetic tradition contributed towards advancing the spiritual side of almost all religious doctrines. Its roots are to be found in the Judaic Kabbala, the Gnostic Christianity and Islamic Sufism. It also resonates in eastern religious and philosophical teachings including Hinduism and Buddhism.
The Greek manuscript that was brought to Florence in the 15th century and was attributed to Hermes Trismegistus and called the Corpus Hermeticum had great influence on the philosophy of Europe from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment and beyond. This is reflected in the life and works of major European figures of science, philosophy, art and literature, including Newton, Nietzsche, Jung, and poets like Shakespeare, Milton, Blake, Yates and Ezra Pond. Among more recent figures, we find Luis Borges, Italo Calvino, Umberto Eco and Fernando Pessoa, and artists such as Max Ernets, Rene Magritte, Frida Kahlo and Rebecca Horn. The principles of Alchemy inspired as well prominent figures in children's literature including Hans Christian Andersen and the creator of Harry Potter, J.K. Rowling.
